Trans4mMED is a science- and technology-driven research initiative built around the visionary goal and mission-orientation of promoting a transformation and a paradigm shift in European Healthcare.
Trans4mMED will be a game changer by combining, for the first time, existing sciences and technologies previously never linked together, into transformative platforms and boosting the development of new collaborative research areas. Trans4mMED will foster a patient centred healthcare by developing personalised therapies in combination with disruptive diagnostic and preventive technologies that will enable a healthier and active lifestyle for people in all ages and conditions.
Trans4mMED will develop excellent research on patient centred therapies for treating diseases and conditions that have a great impact on global society (e.g. chronic diseases or conditions associated to ageing), unmet clinical needs or on the patient (rare diseases).
Trans4mMED will address simultaneously the development of precision diagnostic technologies as well as predictive and preventive tools based on patient specificity. It will apply innovative emerging ICT methodologies to acquire, analyse and correlate patient data with the disease models and define optimal personalised therapies in which the most advanced technology is focused around the patient to generate long-lasting and highly effective novel therapies.
The objective is to drive a transformation in the current healthcare situation by developing a game changing strategy and promoting a paradigm shift in the health and life sciences field.
The grand challenge:
The main scientific goals consist in the development of patient-matched therapies for treating diseases that have a great impact on society (e.g. those associated to ageing and chronic diseases) or on the patient (e.g. rare diseases).
Other scientific and technological goals include the development of early and accurate diagnostic technologies and predictive and preventive tools that enable a paradigm change in healthcare.
The scientific and technological roadmap will be implemented along three stages that include the shifting, converging and integrating of the various fields currently working in isolation or at a distance from each other. The three stages are:
 IDENTIFYING synergies between an increasing number of scientific areas and technologies;
 SHIFTING these by promoting specific challenges – moonshot projects. Along this process, the various fields will be shaped to accommodate the integrations with the other adjacent fields.
 Increasing the complexity of the successive moonshots will require the CONVERGING of additional fields, until reaching a perfect orchestrated INTEGRATION.
Trans4mMED is coordinated by the University of Minho, under the leadership of Prof. Rui L. Reis, Director of 3B’s Research Group, Vice-Rector of Research and Innovation at the University of Minho and Global President of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS).
The University of Minho is supported by a very strong Steering Committee of 18 organisations.
The core and multidisciplinary partnership thus joins under a single initiative several of the leading scientific and technological leaders working in the health and life sciences fields.
The partnership’s extensive experience in these fields, coupled with a strategic vision for the future of health, will guarantee a disruptive approach in the definition and implementation of this action.
